Welcome To Jedha?

In a time before Starlight beacon, there were “THE PATHFINDERS”. Teams designated by the Chancellors of the Republic, sent to explore and unite the furthest reaches of the Outer Rim. This is where we find ourselves in this newest phase of The High Republic.

We meet the Jedi, Vildar Mac, en route to his new posting on ‘The Pilgrim Moon’, Jedha. Clearly a man with a traumatic past, his new role is rather tame; To assist an advisory board meant to facilitate discussion amongst the various religious groups of Jedha…The Convocation. He is soon met by Padawan Matthea Cathley (“Matty”), a fast-talking Twi’lek, who quickly explains that plans have changed and they are to investigate the theft of a holy relic from a local shrine.

It’s from here that this issue’s story picks up. It’s clear that the Jedi don’t hold the same sway and reverence they once did on Jedha, and a scuffle ensues during a street performance. Chasing after a lowly pickpocket, the appearance of a sorceress triggers haunting memories for Vildar. Later confronted by the same mysterious pickpocket who, to Vildar’s surprise, wields an odd set of skills, the issue concludes with a shocking twist.

Verdict

Much like the 2021 run this is a great opening issue, and an exciting start for this new phase of The High Republic. There is quite a bit of exposition, especially in the mid-section, which can feel a bit wordy and bog the reader down. However, Scott uses the opportunity to explain the current “climate” on Jedha. There is very clearly tension between the various spiritual groups, and a clear mistrust of others. Whether this is due to past events (in the case of Vildar) or due to “fake” believers there is an obvious sense of uneasiness. Star Wars is an excellent vehicle for various levels of social and spiritual commentary, and this is another example of that. It will be interesting to see if this theme is carried through the upcoming issues.

Visually the issue is excellent! The use of colors is vibrant and does a great job of painting the liveliness of “The Kyber Heart” (Jedha), and the variety of characters really shows the planet as a true pilgrimage site. There are so many questions regarding the various characters that this issue creates, and time will tell if those are answered. This issue starts and ends with a bang, and it certainly leaves the reader eager for the next installment! Look for issue #2 to hit stands November 9, 2022!
